Root-knot nematodes (RKN), Meloidogyne spp., are pathogens with high impact on agricultural areas; however a limited number of management strategies are available. Since the strategies based on synthetic nematicides pose environmental problems, there is scope for the use of natural nematicides. Recently, it was found that naphthoquinones (juglone and 1,4-naphthoquinone) have high nematicidal activity against these nematodes. Consequently, the aim of this project is to develop a new sustainable and integrated strategy where it is used plastic mulches, through the development of fully degradable-in-soil bionematicide delivery systems based on film-coated biodegradable plastic mulches with nematicidal phytochemicals. This new eco-friendly strategy will improve crop production and protection systems of economically important horticultural crops. The acquired knowledge and technologies will be transferred to researchers, agro-chemicals companies, farmers, public and private organisms and students.
